Default Stomp shear questions

In looking for a used 48" stomp shear. Can anyone tell me what I need to check on when I go look at shears that are for sale? What wears out? What breaks? What do I need to watch out for?

My experience is limited to a big mechanical shear, but the first thing to do would be to look at the blade for nicks or chips. Ours was four sided so the edge could be rotated; I don't know if a foot shear would be the same.

We've had 36" and 54" foot shears. Look for smooth cutting. If it hangs up part way through the cut look carefully for signs the table got tipped over. You don't want a bent table.

Wink shears

I would take some scrap light gage metal and try and shear 1/4 " and see if it cuts all the way down. 48" check and see if it is a clean cut or is the edge rolled. peace dupree
