Default Pexto 278 restoration question

Hello everyone, my name is Brian and I am the owner of The Colonial RedSmith here in Florida. I am currently working on my Pexto 278 and have ran into a snag. I need a new set of cutter heads. They are supposed to be 3 1/16" new, and I am maxed out with my old 100 year old heads at 2 3/4". I can not get it to cut anymore. I am ready to have a new set machined if I have to, any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks for a great site and any help.

Did you try to call Roper Whitney? (now owned by Tennsmith)

Yes, but it's too old, they do not carry the parts. Having the cutting wheels made is turning out to be an adventure. I am waiting for another company that claims they have NOS cutting wheels for old machines. I guess we'll see how that goes if they ever call back.

I'll have to look up that machine. I'm not familiar with it. Got any pictures for us.

Good luck on your search.

Maybe see this post. See if stickman knows where you might be able to get parts.

Brian, that looks great! Keep us posted on your quest for cutters. Mine still work, but I may want to get a spare set if you find a source. John

Thank you,
I am probably going to have several cutting head sets made. It will be the same price for the heat treatment for one or a dozen. I have a machine shop working up a quote to CNC these out of D2 tool steel so these will last and stay sharp longer because part of the heat treatment is a cryogenic treatment. The Pexto 278 heads are 3-1/16" while the Pexto 280 heads are 3-3/4" according to the spec sheet. Not really sure why, but, I would like to make heads for both if there is any interest. It is not going to effect the cost much since it is just a small diameter difference. So, speak up if any of you are interested. I will split the cost of the heat treatment with however many decide they are interested, as well as the actual cost of the machining. I do not want to make any money on this, just to provide a part to like minded folks for a tool that there are no spare parts for. The more of these I make the cheaper they will be. Either way I will have a set or 2. I'll share the actual cost as soon as they get back to me.

Ok, finally have the pricing on the cutting heads. These will fit the 278 pexto. They are made of D2 tool steel, heat treated and sharpened. I have to buy a minimum of 4 sets to even make it worth while. They will be 4-6 weeks out after ordering. If I can get commitment and prepayment I will sell them for $150.00 a set, afterwards, if I have to foot the whole bill, it will be more. This price is not much over cost and will include priority shipping.
If interested, let me know as soon as possible. I'll wait until Monday and then I will order.
If I get more people wanting them and I can order more or someone wants more than one set, the price will be less.
